Heartstone Angus, LLC, was started in 1997 by Erin Evans, when her husband, Dick Evans, a hay farmer in Pueblo, Colorado, encouraged her to change her program to purebred cattle, since in his opinion she spent too much time on her cattle to be in a commercial operation. After about a year of research, Erin acquired her first group of cows from the Simon Angus dispersal in Kansas in 1996. An additional group of cows was added from the Brenner Angus dispersal in North Dakota in 2004.
The original commercial herd goals were transferred to Heartstone Angus with the intent of emphasizing strong maternal traits with moderate sized cows. High conception rates were paramount, while maintaining moderate milk to be productive in our arid West environment.
In 2005, the Evans family accomplished a long-term goal in selling their irrigated Colorado farm and relocating the cattle operation to a ranch 35 miles south of Silver City in the Burro Mountains. C Bar Ranch is now the headquarters for Heartstone Angus, LLC.
Our herd goals remain the same, breeding for replacement heifers that will reproduce consistently on native pasture with minimal outside inputs, to maximize profits for a cow/calf operation. Realizing that the challenges in the future include changes involving increase in retained ownership, niche markets, programs such as Certified Angus Beef, and AngusSource®, improving carcass traits is a strong emphasis in our program.
With these goals in mind, we have built a cow herd utilizing AI sires such as GAR Commitment, Papa Forte 1921, Rito 6I6, Jauer Traveler 353, SAF Fame, Connealy Dateline, New Design 878, and GAR Precision 1680. We are now building on this base with AI sires such as BR Midland, SS Decatur 55H, GAR Precision 9296, and LD Redirect 11. Our herd sires we are using to accomplish this include Heartstone Linebacker R300, a BR Midland son out of a Fame daughter, Heartstone Boromir R356, a Papa Forte son out of a Jauer 353 daughter, and Heartstone Kiwanuke R400, a son of WCC Special Design out of a daughter of H S A F Prompter.
C Bar Ranch will allow for growing the herd to approximately 200 mother cows. Bulls are being marketed both private treaty and at select Angus sales in New Mexico.
